DIY | Gift in a jar ~ Diwali edition

As autumn is just around the corner, so is the impending festive season of Diwali. Besides adorning the house and lighting a sparkler or two, it won't be long before the proverbial question about gifting arises. While I'm no pro at gifting for the festival of lights, I've witnessed my fair share of mithai boxes and dry fruit cases to know that a personalized, thoughtful present is always well appreciated. That is when I decided to give this whole festive gifting business a more contemporary spin.

Now if the Style File archives have taught us anything; it is that I have a mild obsession with jars, especially of the mason variety. So what better way to combine my favorite decor item and stay true to the elements of the festival of lights than with a Diwali themed jar as a well-thought, refreshing present.

For my jar, I've kept the theme to include generic items that are apt as per Diwali traditions as well as a little something something for those with a sweet tooth. The wondrous aspect of this project is how you can customize your jar just the way you like as the items that you include within it can vary depending on the person being gifted. If the individual has an affinity for decor, include a candle or if they are particular about a relaxed vibe in their home, throw in an essential oil.

Take a lesson from Drake and start from the bottom; of the jar that is. My base is layered with beads and foil confetti to add a more wholesome quality to the jar overall. Next, take your most heavy item and place it on the floor of your jar which, for me, are the potlis of organic rangoli colour. Then stack your item which is slighter lighter, which is my tea light candles. Finally, top it up with your lightest item which are my chocolates.

To finish it off, sprinkle a little more confetti over the items. Start sealing the jar by spreading your fabric tightly over the mouth of the jar and tie a rubber band around the neck to keep it taut. Then with the help of a ribbon, conceal the rubber band by tying a bow around it.

Depending on the size of the jar, you can pack more or less items within it. It is a good idea to pack edibles in a separate package before layering it with the other items in the jar. Finally, there you have it - your Diwali themed gift in a jar is personal and modern while staying true to the festival of lights.

Here's to a warm and prosperous Diwali!
