In a world where street style is a fashion parade and personal style bears very little originality, coming across a true stylista is rare. Years ago, when street style wasn't as commercialized as it is today, I spotted pictures of a petite figure bundled up and smizing for the camera. A few seasons later, there she was again. A little internet sleuthing later, the style maven had a name.
From Anna Del Russo to Anna Wintour, we thought we knew the biggies of the fashion industry but it isn't your fault if you haven't heard of Miroslava Duma. She hails from Russia, a country we would hardly associate with high flying fashion, but one look at the tiny fashionista and those notions will change for good.
Being one of the earliest street style stars to be shot by The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman elevated Miroslava to the next level. And while I'm not easily impressed by the way of style spottings, Mira's was different. Her sleek brunette locks, her barely there makeup and small stature spoke to me on a personal level. That's when I knew that this was an It Girl to look out for.
Besides her sky high style game, this lady has the business smarts too! Armed with a masters in business, Miroslava took her first step in the journalism pool as an editor with Harper's Bazaar. Not shabby at all, I say! From there, she branched into freelancing for a variety of top notch glossies like Glamour and Vogue. Finally she went on create Buro 24/7, an all inclusive digital digest of the latest in art, cinema, fashion and much more. She hasn't been termed as a 'brilliant entrepreneur' and 'force of the fashion industry' for no reason, you know. She is a speaker on fashion, has taken her website to new heights and collaborates regularly with luxury brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton.
While women with legs for days can be red hot, I've always related well to those similar to my proportions. That's probably why Miroslava's style tops my charts. She dresses like a dream while experimenting with every silhouette in the book. While I was always apprehensive of the towering trench coat, Miroslava made me revisit it. She tackles the lampshading fashion trend with ease as does she with a short suit.
Print mixing? Mira's been there and done that. Whimsy prints, floral appliques and bundled up chic all have her name on it. If there's a new in town trend or a classic twist, the diminutive diva does it all with ease. No wonder she's a global street style icon. Come
fashion week and you know which It Girl to keep your eyes peeled for!
